Learn to Skate

Monroe Multi-Sports Complex offers Learn To Skate Classes for ages 3 years and older.   These classes Held on Saturday Mornings offer the perfect opportunity to learn skating for the Beginner to the Advanced Levels.   Classes offered are approved by the United States Figure Skating Basic Skills Program.  Classes are 30 minute lesson and 30 minute practice.   (Higher levels may have practice first followed by lesson).


Fall/Winter 2013-2014 Sessions:   

Session 5:   April 26 to May 24, 2014 [5 week session]
Session 6:   June 14 to August 23, 2014  (No Class July 5)

Snowplow Sam 1 to 3

Ages 3 to 5 year olds

The Snowplow Sam Levels are desinged to help preschool age skaters develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice.

Classes:   Saturdays at 11:00am

Includes additional practice sessions on Saturdays from 12:15-1:50pm

Session 5 Cost:  $50.00

Session 6 Cost:  $70.00


Basic 1 to 6 & Adult

Ages 6 and older

The "basic skills" are the fundamentals of the sport.   These eight levels of the program introduce the fundatmental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and mohawks.  Upon completion of the Basic 1-6 levels, skaters will have a basic knowledge of the sport, enabling them to advance to more specialized areas of skating.

(Basic 3 and above may require multiple sessions of classes prior to complete all elements to move to next level)

Classes:   Saturdays at 11:00am

Includes additional practice sessions on Saturdays from 12:15-1:50pm

Session 5 Cost:  $50.00

Session 6 Cost:  $70.00


Bridge Class

(Basic 7 to Preliminary Free Skate)

The Bridge Program is designed to teach skating skills at a faster pace in a group lesson environment.  Students will learn both Moves In The Field along with Free Skate.

Classes:  Wednesdays 4:30-5:20pm;  Saturdays from 10:00-10:50am

1 Private 25 Minute Lesson Per Week

Session 5 Cost:  $100.00

Session 6 Cost:  $150.00


Learn To Compete Class

(Must be currently enrolled in the MMSC Learn To Skate Program)

Learn To Compete is designed to train and prepare skaters currently enrolled in the MMSC Learn To Skate Program for participation in the Michigan Basic Skills Competition Series.   Through this program skaters will prepare for the event at their individual level,  learn the process of competing and attend a local Basic Skills Competition*.  The program is intended to introduce skaters to the excitement of competition, improve individual skating skills, and foster feelings of accomplishment and good sportsmanship.

Classes:  Saturdays 9:00-10:00am

Cost:  $10.00 per session


May 31 - Journey The River Raisin  (Monroe, MI)

June 14 - Ann Arbor Skills & Showcase (Ann Arbor, MI)

June 21 - Summer Swizzle (Farmington Hills, MI)

July 12 - Summer Chill Basic Skills (Novi, MI)


Program includes:   30 minute lesson and 30 minute practice (exact times on the class descriptions)
